“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth
give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.” Ps. 46:1-3
“The LORD is my light and my salvation – whom shall in fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid?” Ps. 27:1
“The LORD is my Shepherd…” Ps. 23:1
“…in the beginning You laid the foundations of the earth and the foundations are the work of your hands.
They will perish, but You remain. They will all wear out like a garment…But You remain the same and Your years will never end.” Ps. 102:25-27
Many of you know how I love the study of the names of God in Scripture. The titles by which he identifies
Himself to us are so telling of His character and nature, and digging deep into them helps us grow in our
knowledge of God – and growing in our knowledge of God is so foundational to our faith. Do you have a
favorite title of God? I mean, is there one in particular which seems to be your go-to when you think of God?
Many have such a title or attribute, but a word of caution for those of us who do:
God cannot be parted out like one might do with an old car, and we wouldn’t want Him to be. He is God. His
essence in intact. He is all that He is – and all that we need - all of the time. He is not compartmentalized, and
that’s a great thing. Can you imagine lifting up a prayer, only to hear “Please hold. I’m Truth today, and
tomorrow I will be Strength. Mercy comes around again on Wednesday, but Faithful will have to wait until the
end of the week” ? Instead, when we call upon Him through Jesus our Lord, we are given access to the Throne
of grace (Heb. 4:14-16) where we will meet with God who will supply mercy and grace sufficient for our needs.
Not pieces and parts, nor scraps left over from a busy weekend of being God, but God. Most High.
Creator/Possessor of heaven and earth. Provider. Refuge. Fortress. Ever present help. All knowing. All
powerful. The Healer. Our Righteousness. Wisdom. Truth. Wrath. Tender Shepherd. Full of grace and abounding in mercy.
You get the idea. He’s all that – and more. And we have the blessed access to all of Him in Jesus. Whatever
your season in life, whatever leg of the journey you are on, take comfort in knowing that God does not have
‘seasons.’ Likewise, you will not find him morphing over time. He is the unchanging One. He is God, and He is all that you need, all of the time.
